TURF TOPICS. I (By "Moturoa.!') j The Canterbury J.C. Metropolitan and land B.C. Spring meetings open to-day, and'! with nil the cracks engaged (including a good number of Taranaki horses) punters will have much to Interest them. Turf followers re-H quire no reminding that the New Zealand Cup, Welcome Stakes, and Stewards' Handicap will be run at Rlcearton this afternoon, and that the Mltchelson Cup, A.B.C,'Welcome Stakes, and Great Northern Guineas will be the chief events at Elterslle. These notable events nave been discussed for months past; and the Bar Ton await the slaughter. It is a poor spring meeting at either Rlccarton or Elleralle that does not earn the layer the price of a new house or a benzine waggon 1 The final gallops have.been galloped, and the final wagers wagered. In connection with the New Zealand Cup, and the final conclusions are Unchanged. Gay lad has come through the ordeal best, and, is the charts suggest, he Is going to be a hard horse to beat Kllrush Is now quoted at a point longer than the Canterbury crack, and Nobleman and Mascot are separated by similar amounts. Vagabond comes next In the betting, but good prices straight-out, or for a place, are obtainable about Yolo, Heathercote, and maruum. Kllooon Is at a longer price than warranted, but Battle Song, Hurry Up, Eleus, Bingham, and Sweet Tlpperary are probably In their right places. Summed up, track form and betting points to Gay Lad an easy first, with Kllrush and Mascot next best. To-day's racing at Blccarton opens with the Spring- Hurdles, run over two miles. Paraoa Is likely to start favorite, but he will be nsy giving 341bs to Sonnlno, who not only lumps well, bnt stays on strongly. A very large field Is likely to be seen out in the Spring Plate, one mile, and Sea Sprite, Bose Wreath, Bonnie Heather, Counterscarp and Falstaff can all run eight furlongs Well. Probably Sea Sprite and Counterscarp will hare most backers. The Llnwood Handicap, seven furlongs, presents some difficulties, as the field Is of even mediocrity. Flight Commander and Starlike havs recent form to recommend thorn. The C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, four furlongs, r.ppeirs to lie between recent winners like Humbug and Moorfowl, and much depends on luck at the barrier. Moorfowl Is very fast out of the slips, but If the Hawke's Bay colt gets away well I expect him to soundly thrash Clifford's best two-year-old. Then comes the Apprentices' Handicap, one mile. The field Is not a good one, and Sans Struct and Egmont Park (if reserved) may prove the best. A great race Is anticipated In the Stewards' Handicap. Bon Spec. Brackenfield, P"iert Gold, Silver Link, and Maloha have wen heavily supported with the Cup favorites, and It looks as If the winner will como from the quintette. Desert Gold will probably slart favorite, or sbou!3 do so, and Bon Spec, Onslaught, and Maloha should all be handy at the finish. To-day's racing will conclude with the Rlccarton Welter, nine furlongs, In which recent Winners like Karo, Loyal Arch, and Dribble must be given chances. They may supply the winner. At Ellerslle punters will commence operations (parting with their money 1) with the Maiden Hurdles, one and a half miles. Entente Cordlale may be favorite, but Ngakanul and Notability may make things Interesting. The Great Northern Guineas, one mile, should give Hetaua and Crenides a chance to try themselves out r/ros<»rlv. Dunedtn, Landslide, at ! Weary Willie should be prominent In the A.RC. Welcome. Stakes, 5 furlongs, and It will be Interesting to See how Australian form, as represented by Duntdin, will pan out as compared with Auckland two-year-old form. J. The Onehunga Steeplechase, three miles, should be an Interesting race. The field Is nunerlcMly strong, but Tenacious and Jacaranaa may be best at % fhe weights. A great race Is anticipated In the Mltchelson Cap. one rafle ir.i a quarter. Some Boy. who heads the list, Is quite capable of running well with 9.9, end promises to run a great race. There are a host of possibilities amongst the Bst division, and Gold Kip and Uncle Ned may hold their own. Marqueteur Is a strong tip from Pate'a, but many good Judges will not have him. Some Boy, Gold Kip, and TJncle Ned should give their supporters a good run for their mor.ey. ft a game punter to go for anything in tIV Hobson Handicap, 6 furlongs,'for which 39 horses have been accepted. With any luck Guanaco should fill a place. The Plying Handicap, seven furlongs, will see Rekanul and Hlneamaru In big demand, but the writer fondly hopes that Paddington Green will rush up at the finish and land the mustard. It Is P.G.'s turn.
