A MILITARY DEFAULTER.
LEAVES HERE FOR AMERICA. NOTORIOUS CASE RECALLED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehurch, Last Night. Hope Whitfield Home, a military defaulter, who achieved a good deal of prominence about twelve months ago, recently lodged an appeal against the inclusion of his name in the military defaulters' list, hut when his name was called in the Magistrate's Court this afternoon it was said Home had left for America about three weeks ago. Home achieved notoriety in the first place owing to the insistence with which lie claimed to be an American citizen. He gave the mili'iry authorities a great deal of trouble before he was finally sentenced by a District Court-martial'at Christchurch on November 29th last year to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labor on a charge of failing to obey the lawful commands of his superior officer. Mr. Raymond, K.C., wiio appeared for the Defence Department, stated that he had been advised that the appellant could not be present, as he had left the country. The. Magistrate (Sir McCarthy): Yes, that is correct. He left with a passport issued by the American Government, The Magistrate dismissed the appeal, with costs against the appellant.
