A Sydney message says that Mr. E. J. Norton wil succeed Mr. Brittain- as Consul-General for America. A peerage has been conferred on Admiral AVemyss, First Sea Lord of the Admiralty. Mr. R. W. Shallcrass, of Wellington, general secretary of the New Zealand Sports Protection League, was in New Plymouth yesterday. Mr. Lan Malcolm lias been appointed a director of the Suez Canal (says a London cable). Mr. A. J. Ching, who was clerk of the Eli ham Magistrate's Court, for a period about five years ago, but was transferred to Auckland, has now taken charge of the Stratford and Eltharn courts, with headquarters at Stratford. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Newall, late of the Awatmia store, left on Friday last for their new home at Tariki. where they have taken over the Tariki store. Mr. W. A. Lind.has taken over the Awatuna store, and has been apopinted postmaster.
At a sitting of the Native Land Court at Noraanby yesterday, His Honor Judge Brown, who is being transferred to the Gisborne district, was farewelled by members of the legal profession. Mr. R. C. Hughes expressed the regret of the profession at the Judge's departrre, and alluded to the cordial relations which had always existed between the Judge and the legal fraternity. He also paid a tribute to the fair and just manner in which Judge Brown had given his decisions, and thanked his Honor for his unvarying courtesy, wishing him a prosperous career in his new district. Other solicitors present, together with the Native interpreter, Mr. J. H. Dawson, endorsed Mr. Hughes' remarks. Judge Brown replied, expressing his thanks and appreciation of the kindness extended to him.
