The Daily News. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1919. THE INGLEWOOD COUNTY.

The promoters of,the Inglewood County are to be congratulated upon the successful outcome of their efforts. They had a very good case for converting the Koad Board into a County Council, giving the district independence, a higher status, and greatly enlarged powers. The opposition they met withr—in our opinion, unfortunate opposition—only spurred them to greater effort, and to-day the promoters have the reward of their persistency. We have no doubt the new county will bo a success and justify its existence. It is a conpact area, with a distinct community of interest, and it possesses public men with progressive ideas which they have applied successfully in the administration of the affairs of the Road Board. It is frequently argued that the day of small counties is over, and that it would be better to merge with their neighbors and make bigger counties, but Taranaki's experience has been that the smaller counties have done the best work, shown the most enterprise, and administered their affairs most economically. The bigger and older counties have, on the other hand, been slower to move with the times and adapt themselves to the newer conditions. No one in the Eltham or Waimate County districts would dream of going back to the old conditions. The Inglewood district lias enjoyed a certain measure of local government through the Road Board. Now that it has been given control of the main road, as well as an extension of its boundaries, it will have an opportunity for rendering even more useful service in the future than in the past. From what transpired at Saturday's meeting of the Road Board, the leaders of the new county are sensible of the enlarged responsibilities entailed, and can be depended upon to worthily discharge them.
