MORE MONEY FOR M.P.'s

PROPOSED SUPERANNUATION FUND.

(By Wire.—Own Correspondent.) Wellington, November 1,

The Prime .Minister made an announcement in the House to-night indicating his intention to move to increase the honorarium of the members of the next Parliament.

It is understood that the proposal will be to raise the honorarium from £3OO to £4OO a year at least. There is a scheme also for the payment of superannuation to members of Parliament who have given a great part of their lives to Parliamentary service. It. is' well known that there arc ex-members of the House who are now in needy circumstances and there arc votes on the estimates every year to provide one or two of them with modest pensions. The suggestion is that there s>hall be. created a superannuation fund 'by the payment of £f)o per year on account of each member, this payment to be in addition to the increase in salary of £IOO. There arc many difficulties about the formulation of a workable superannuation scheme. It is suggested that in order to be entitled to any superannuation rights a member shall have served for three Parliaments *>r sine yeara.
