AN INTERESTING SITUATION. BOLSHEVIKS LAUNCH COUNTER STROKE. gXHAUSTED BY THEIR ATTACK* » By TdejMph.—Press Assn.—CowrW. j Received Nov. 2, 5.5 p.m. j London, Oct. 30. Tha Australian Press Association learns that the Russian military situation is regarded as intensely interesting. The Bolsheviks massed a large force •Ik Petrograd for a counter offensive. The bulk were put in west of Erasnoe Selo, and worked round it, compelling .Yudenitch's retirement to a shorter line. The effort appears to have exhausted the Bolsheviks, who sufferred severely, and ft is beßeved the situation is now stable. Denikin continues to press forward generally, and Petloura's army is rei girded as a dying concern, dangerous neither to Denikin nor to the Bolsheviks. —AUS.-N.Z. Cable Assn. K. ANOTHER VERSION. "YUDENITCH CONTINUES TO RETREAT." - Received Nov. 2, 5.5 p.m. Copenhagen, Oct. 30. Yudenitch. continues to retreat, and t tk» initiative has passed entirely into jft4 hands of the Bolsheviks. „ BOLSHEVIKS IN RETREAT. i * SpteHKIN'S SUCCESSFUL ATTACKS. , SEVERE FIGHTING CONTINUES. ' Received Nov. 2, 11.5 p.m. London, Nov. 1. . '• The War Office 1 states that the Bolsheviks, on the 29th inst., attempted to break through at Ropscha, which formed the junction of Yudenitch's troops and the Esthonians. The Bolsheviks created a gap, but' ft counter-attack closed the gap, and 1500 Bolsheviks were taken prisoner. The Bolsheviks retreated to Krasnoe pelo. There is apparently nn truth in the Bolshevik statement that Yudenitch has evacuated Gatchina. Denikin's Don. army surrounded a Bolfehevfk division, and also captured Abrahomov, with 900 prisoners. Denikin occupied Robrov after heavy fighting. A volunteer army is heavily engaged on both sides of Yelets and Orel, and has taken 600 prisoners. Denikin's troops westward of Kieff forced back the Bolsheviks to the Ippen River. The only set-back on the whole front was at Voronoak, where severe lighting continues. Denikin's troops .Were forced back to the Don River.— 4U4.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ] YUDENITCH'S FAILURE. . RAGE AGAINST SNOW LOST. \ •.. * / London, Oct. 29. ■The Morning Post's Helsingfors correspondent says that, despite the boldness of Yudenitch's thrust towards Petrograd, it is now certain that the entire operation will result in failure, perhaps a catastrophe. Yudenitch has lost the race against the coming snows and furthermore 'may be driven into the heavy swamp southward and south-westward of Gatchina, around which fighting is now progressing. Snow is falling and Immediately melting; it makes the swamp a death-trap whither the Bolveheviks are aiming to drive Yudenitch's ■nnyTBARSKOE SELO RETAKEN. ! • ASHLAND'S TERMS FOR km. London, Oct. 29. The Helsingfora correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, telegraphing on Tuesday, states that it is officially announced that Yudenitch has recaptured Tsarskoe Selo and is attacking Krasnaya Gorka in conjunction with the British fleet. Finland refused Yudenitch's request ' for aid, but seems willing to send troops If Yudenitch is willing to make territorial and money concessions.—Aus.-N.Z. (table AssnAN IDOLISED LEADER. STRIKES UNEXPECTED BLOWA London, Oct. 29. Mr. Harold Williams, writing from Rostoff, gives details of the amazing raid made by Mamantov behind the Bolshevik lines, in which he lost four killed and 20 wounded in two month's, yet destroyed 500 guns in Voronesk alone and demobilised 100,000 Bolshevik recruits. Mamantov mobilised the whole population at Jelets to carry half a feaflion . shells outside thf town, where they were blown op. He noticed a professor not working and asked him why. The man replied "It is not my buisness; I am a professor." Mamantov cried: "A professor should give a good example," and ', gave Him 50 lashes- After a sound thrashing the professor went ruefully to work. The Cossacks moved fifty miles daily, striking the most unexpected blows. The men idolised Mamantov. A typical piece of his humor was the making of a cage in which Trotsky was to be carried Jvben caught.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. "DRINKO" PROMOTES PROSPERITY.
