At the wool sales all qualities were very firm and medium crossbreds were especially strong; low sorts sold at full opening rates. Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., are in receipt of a cable from ihelr London house under date of Oct. 27, reading as follows: Wool sales opened. Attendance of buyers Is largo, competition animated, anjl the selection good. As compared with last sales closing rates, fine and medium crossbred are 5 per "cent, higher, and coarse crossbreds unchanged. Merinos are very firm, and any change in prices is In favor ol' sellers. DIVIDEND. London, Oct. 30. The P. and O. Company's dividend for the year on deferred stock Is 12 per cent, free of tas. The directors recommend 'that Instead of paying the usual bonus of 6 per cent, this amount should be added to the reserve. At Ohura, on Oct. 23, I had a fair yarding of cattle, most of which changed hands at present rates. Thero was a marked inquiry for young cattlo, tho offering of this clas3 not meeting requirements. No slieop came forward. Small yearling heifers £3 15s to £4 2s Gd, good ditto £6 6s, 15-month steers £4 4s to £6, 2-year steers £6 10s to £7, 2 and 3-yoar ditto £8 2s to £9, 4-year bullocks £lO Iss to £l2 4s, 2-year empty heifers £7 2s Gd to £7 10s, fat heifers £ll 2s 6(1, store cows £0 to £8 3s, springing heifers £8 5s to £9 ss, bulla £7 to JSlu. At Rahotu, on Oct.. 24, I held my fortnlghtlj sals and annual bull fair. Store cattl# sold as follows: Good 15-month steers £5 6s, smaller ditto £3 la to £3 15s, well grown 15montu Holstoin heifers £6 18s, small Jersey ditto £5 to £5 3s, others £3 10s to £4, 2-year empty heifers £7 12s Od to £8 lis, fat heifers £ll los, fat and forward cows £lO 10s to £l2, store ditto £6 lis to £S, dairy heifers showing quality and close to profit sold well, making up to £l6, cows to £ls 10s. Of the bulls yarded in tha pedigree class a few Shorthorns on account of Mr. A. P. Chapman were ali that were saleable, these realising from 13 to 15 gns. Grade Jerseys sold up to £l2, snorthorns to £ls 15s.
At Kaponca, on the samo day I held a bull fair and cattlo salo. The yarding of store cattle was small, hut prices were quite up to those of recent sales. Good 15-month steers £4 8s to £5 7s,.heifers £5 13s, small ditto £3 16s, empty heifers £6 12s to £B, forward light cows £9 to £lO, store ditto £6 to £7 2s 6d. There was a fair yarding of dairy heifers, good aorta meeting with good sales, selling to 15s, backward sorts £8 10s to £lO. T had a good yarding of all classes of bulls mostly grade's of fair quality throughout. Inquiry was keen, a most satisfactory clearance of all classes resulting. ' Pedigree Jerseys 15 gns., Frlesians 16 to 24 gns., Shorthorns 25 gns., grade Jerseys 10 to 25 gns., Frlesians 7 to 25 gns., Shorthorns 6 to 16 gns., Ayrshlres 5 gns. At Stony River, on the 28th. inst,, I held a bull fair and <;attle sale. With the exception of a few pens of young cattle the yarding was rather of a poor quality. Inquiry was very keen, everything selling bnr a few pens of 2 and 3-yoar steers. Mixed yeaTlings £3, well-grown 15-month heifers £5 12s 6d to £6 10s, others £3 8s to £4 15s r steers £5, 2 and 3-yepr ditto £8 15s, fat ditto £l3 ss. empty heifers £7 10s to £B, small ditto £5 lfis to £6, forward cows £lO to £ll 15s, store ditto £C 2s 6d to £7 12s 6(1. Dairy heifers were mostly small and backward sorts selling from £9 to £l4 10s, cows up to £IP. At Urenui, on 29th. inst., I held my fortnightly sale and annual bull fair, the store yarding was good. Satisfactory business resuiting at prices ruling generally. Yearling to 15-month steers £3 15s to £4 10s, heifers £5 to £6, mixed, yearlings £3 fla, empty heifers £6 lis to £8 7s Cd, 2-year steers colored sorts £5 15s to £6 Is, 3-year ditto £7 Cs to £9, fat cows £l3 10s, store ditto £6 15s to £9 2s 6d, cows and calves £B, 4'too f h wethers 39s 7d, liixed sexed hoggets 29s 7d, poor ditto £l. Dahr cattle were penned in fair numbers, the quality however bein* rather poor, consequently inquiry was easier. Heifers sold from £8 to £l3, cows £ll to £l3 10s. A fairly large entry of bulls of all classes came forward. Pedigree Tersays sold well, as also grades of all other breeds Pedigree Jerseys 40 and 44 gns, nice quality grade Jerseys £2O to £35, others £8 to £l7, Shorthorns £8 to £lB, IViesians £9 10s to £l3. ADDINGTON MARKET. Chrlstchurch, Oct. 29. At Addington market there was nn allround increase In the Six rails of fat sheep were penned as against four last week, and 270 bullocks, compared with 105 last week Sheep were down a few shillings per head-on the preceding week's rates, but beef maintained previous prices. The store slicep'yarding was about equal to last week's and inquiry was keen, particularly for wethers. Rates were about the same for owes and lambs. Two-tooth ewes with lambs 20s lOd to 22s 9d (all counted), sound-mooth ewes 28s fid, with lambs IRs 8d to 22s 6d (all counted)i four-tooth wethers 455, four and sixtooth wo'hers 33s to „3Rs od, six-tooth wethers 32s fid, ewe hoggets 23s 2d to 38s Id, m.s. hoggets 28s Bd, wether hoggets 19s Id to 33s 3d Lambs: 152 were penned, compared with 303 last week. The quality was slijrhtiy improved. Last week's prices were maintained Prime fat lambs sold up to 38s fid, and medium up to 335. Pat sheep: A bigger proportion than usual wer* well finished, but the yarding being fully sufficient for butchers' requirements there was a slackening in demand, particularly for medium sorts. Some prime quality ewes brought Increased values, and one extra prime wether 100':, nrime 60s Od to 735, medium 50s Gd to 595, lighter 35s to 4Ss, extra prime ewes 70s, prime ewes 45s to f,7s 3d, medium 43s 9d to 51s. lighter 31s to 41s 3d, prime hoggets 33s Id to 36s 3d, lighter to 30s Od. , Pat cattle: Better quality bullocks were comprised In the yarding than a.t the previous sale, and last, week's high rates were quite maintained Extra prime steers to £47 10s, prime £2l to £36, ordinary £9 12s Gd to £l9, extra prime heifers to £2B 10s, prime heifers £l6 to £24 10s, ordinary £lO 5s to £ls, extra primo cows to £2B, primo £l4 30s to £l9 10s, ordinary £lO 5r to £l4 Store cattle: A large yarding, heifers and dry cows predominating. Inquiry was scarcely so keen. itour-year~old s'eers, £lO to £l4 15s, two and a half to throe-year steers £lO 7s Gd to £l2 10a, two-year steers £9 10s. 18-month steers £5 to £6 7s 6d, cows to £B, calves £2. Vealers: A large yarding, mostly freshly-dropped calves. There was strong inquiry. Runners to £lO 15s, good vealers £3 5s to £5, fair vealers 42s 6d to 50s. small and Inferior 5s to 40s. Dairy cows: The yarding was a fairly good one, although there was a proportion of poor-conditioned-animals yarded. There was improved inquiry. Second and third calvers £8 to £l6, freshlv-ealved cows £lO, heifers £5 to £l2 ss. Pigs: There was an average yarding, with keen competition for porkers, but the demand for baconers was unaltered. Prime baconers to £B, heavy baconers £6 to £l, medium baconers £5 5s to £5 15s, equal to lOd per lb; heavy poTkers 90s to 955, medium porkers 70s to 80s, equal to lid to ll%d per lb.choppers £6 to £9 16s. Store pigs: A big entry and keen inquiry. Best stores £3 10s to £3 15s, medium stores 50s to 58s, small stores 52s to 58s, weaners 23s to 41s, sows in pig £7 10s. BURNSIDE MARKET, Dunedin, Oct, 29. At Burnslde to-day, 170 fat cattle were penned. The quality was medium to good. The entry included a few pens of extra prime bullocks. Prices were slightly below late raten. Prime heavy bullocks £45 to £sl, prime £27 to £35, lighter £lB 10s upward, prime cows and heifers ,to £23 17s Gd, medium £l7 to £l9, lighter £ll upwards. Fat sheep (920 penned): Tho entry included a few pens of prime quality, but the majority were light and unfinished. Prices opened 2s to 3s above late ra*es, but eased towards the finish. Lambs (34 penned): With the exception of two or SjbTA* nana duality &IA onlr fair to medium.
Prices opened at lato rates, but light and unfinished declined 2s to Sd. there was " small. yarding of pigs. Pan and storei realised very high prices, well-known slips bringing 85a.
