RIOTS IN EGYPT.
TROOPS FIRE ON THE CROWD. STRIKES THREATENED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, October 28. Telegrams from Alexandria report that serious rioting followed mid-day prayers at a notoriously seditious mosque. The trouble began when the Egyptian police endeavored to prevent the demonstrations and attempted to close the mosque and when they charged the crowd and used truncheons. British troops arrived in motor lorries and found a general affray in progress. The troops, after firing in the air, were obliged to fire on the crowd, killing two natives and wounding ten. The disorders continued until the evening. Twenty-Beven Egyptian policemen were injured . Railwaymen and telegraphists threaten to strike, and the population of Alexandria is becoming apprehensive regarding food Supplies. As a result the shops are being besieged. CAIRO STRIKE OVER. • ALEXANDRA- RIOTS SUPPRESSED. Received Nov. 1, 12.10 a.m. Cairo, Oct. 29. The extreme Nationalists have suffered a severe reverse owing to the failure of the railway strike. has been resumed after a temporary stoppage and a partial service is now hinning under military protection. Riota broke out at Alexandria on Saturday. The military suppressed the disturbances. >, Twio rioters were killed and many police and rioters injured.—Aua.-N.Z. Cable Aesn.
