GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL.

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING. 'ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Owing to the splendid organisation that prevails and the keenness with which the pupils enter into the various events, the annual sports gatherings held in connection with the New Plymouth High Schools have gained a great reputation amongst friends of the schools and lovers of sport generally. Favored with perfect weather conditions, it was, therefore, no surprise' that there was a good attendance at the annual sports which were aeld in connection with the New Plymouth Girls' High School on the school sports ground yesterday. The grounds were looking splendid, and the arrangements for the sports, which were controlled by the staff of the school, were again excellent, the huge programme being got through right up to time and without any hitch. The girls all entered into the various competitions with a zest that was refreshing to see, and a very pleasing feature was that, having tried their utmost to win, the losers were always among the first to congratulate the winners. The programme was a varied one, including running, jumping, and novel events, and it was surprising the number of events that eaeh girl competed in. The obstacle race, which required eight heats, three semi-finals, and a final, attracted great interest. The course was no easy one, including a sack race, through wool packs, over a fence, count peas in envelope, under plank close to ground, over gate, through hoops, and finally over a rope net, and much amusement was created. In the high jump (Senior) M. Thomson put up a record for the school by jumping 4ft. ljin. This young lady annexed the Senior Championship, winning all Ave championship events,' and also scoring freely in the other events. To the organising capabilities of Miss Barr, principal of the school, a good deal of the success is undoubtedly due, but she was ably assisted by the members of the staff. Miss Burrows, as starter, got the events off smartly, whilst Misses Clark and Fairbrother, as judges, gave their decisions promptly and correctly. Afternoon tea was served in the assembly hall. Miss Drew, assisted by Misses Smith and Lennon, had charge of this department. I A jumble and sweets stall, in aid of the Young Helpers' League (Dr. Barnardo's Home), in charge of Leila Hall, appeared to be doing good business. The results of the sports are as follow: — .
