WAITARA.

Waitara, Oct. 30.

Mr. George Lear, who has been for the past two years overseer for the borough, left this morning to take up his duties as sanitary inspector at Wanganui. Wo were sorry to hear that Mr. B. Topliss was thrown from his horse on Sunday morning and sustained a fracture of one leg. He was. taken to the hospital, where, we are glad to hear, he is doing well.

The meeting held on Tuesday nigljt for the purpose of deciding upon the holding of a show here was not very well attended, but those present were of the opinion that an autumn,, show of garden products would be successful, and it was resolved that one be held. The following officers were elected: Patron, the Mayor; president, Mr. L. Hoskin; vice-presidents, Messrs G. V. Tate, A. H. Halcombe, and S. G. Fraser; committee, Mesdames Birdling, A. Andrews, W. Siiue, W. T. Joll, E. Buheaus, Messrs L. Birdling, W. H. Marlow, W. H. Nosworthy, A. Young, H. McKenzie, H. Chappel, 11. Purdey, E, Cole, A. G. Hicks, C. Aubrey, L. Tate, O. Keig; A. J. Arms, with power to add. j Mr. R. Laurence is to be asked to act as secretary. The subscription was fixed at ladies 2s 6d, gentlemen ss. The matter of securing country' subscribers and exhibitors was left in 'the hands of Mr. Marlow. Mr. G. V. Tate intimated that he would not compete, but would make a display for exhibition purposes only.

The long night dance, with which the series of dances got up by the football club was wound up, was held last night. There waß a very good attendance, and things went with the customary smoothness which has been a feature of these dances. Mr. S. G. George and F. Proctor were the M'sC, and the music was supplied by Mr. J. Taylor. The B.s. City of Winchester finished her loading on Wednesday morning. She took 6(i17 quarters of beef, 28,455 carcases of mutton, and 1005 boxes of frozen sundries. She sails direct for Melbourne.
