Sergt. Loveday, the winner of the King's Prize at Bisley, is spending a short holiday in Hawera. Sergeant Reed, of Wangamii, is at present temporarily in charge of the New Plymouth police, during the ab. sence of Sub-Inspector Hutton on sick leave.
Lieut. Grant, V.C., is to be accorded, this morning, on his arrival at Hawera by the train reaching there at 11.25 a.m., a similar reception to that given to Lieut Laurent, V.C.
A rather painful accident befell Mr.' Strputs, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Patea, on Monday morning, while riding through Hurleyville on horseback. Hi 9 horse shied, and he was thrown and had one of his legs badly broken above the ankle. A passing ear took him in to the Patea hospital.
Mr. L. H. Aslibolt, of Hobart, who has been appointed Agent-General for Tasmania in London, in succession to late Sir John HcCall, is the eldest aon of the late Mr. A. Aslibolt, of Wellington, well known for many years as a cricket enthusiast. Mr. Ashbolt has been managing director of a well-known firm in Hobart for several vears.
Very keen regret was expressed at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Land Building and Investment Society that owing to the condition of his health Colonel Ellis had been compelled to decline nomination to the directorate. A resolution was jessed recording high appreciation of the valued service rendered by him over a long period of years. Mr. Win. Easton has been appointed manager of the utago Daily Timcc and Witness Newspapers Company, lie has been in the service of the company for 30 years, and accountant for 20 years. Sir George Fcnwick is retain.n;; tl.e position of managing director, wiiicii lie has held since the formation of the company in IS"C.
