"D.C.M. WINNER" IN COURT.
A SUSPICIOUS FIRE. Some days ago a young man calling himself "John Harris, D.C.M.," called at an Invercargill newspaper office and offered to give an account of his experiences while serving at sea during the war. Harris, as he called himself, was interviewed at length, and a graphic and detailed account of what he alleged lie had seen in the Battle of Jutland was published, to be followed a few days later, with an account of a visit to Archangel. A few days after his arrival in Invercargill Harria enlisted the aid of some of the leading citizens to secure employment for him, and he was ultimately engaged as a night watchman by Wright, Stephenson and Co. Last night a mysterious fire, doing little damage, was "located" by the watchman, but suspicions were aroused, resulting in his arrest and appearance before the Court to-day on a charge ol" wilfully damaging a waste-paper basket. He was remanded on Friday. At the police station he was identified as one Joseph Harris, alias D. J. Barrett, who is "wanted" in Dunedin in connection with a charge of breaking and entering the premises of James Ripley at Port Chalmers on September 15, and stealing therefrom goods valued at £3B.
