ANTI-PROFITEERING BILL. Brisbane, Oct. 24. The Assembly is discussing the second reading of the Anti-Profiteering Bill. DEFENCE EXPENDITURE. Melbourne, Oct. 24. In the House of Representatives Mr. Watt stated that the Defence expenditure for the current year had been reduced by 30 per cent. It was not proposed to make further reductions until Australia's future policy of Defence ha'l been decided upon. TAXING THE FARMER. Sydney, Oct. 24. Prominent union officials are drafting a scheme to limit the exportation of flour, frozen meat, hides, and leather with a view to reducing the cost of living. THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. I Melbourne, Oct. 24. Mr. Glynn announced that the cruiser Brisbane had been sent to Darwin to maintain order. THE SUGAR CROP. Received Oct. 24, 10.5 p.m. i Brisbane, October 23. It is officially stated that owing to drought the sugar crop will probably be 155,000 tons. This is considerably lower than the May estimate of the crop.—Aus.-N.Z. ' The re-drafted Children Maintenance or Living Bill contains all the essentials of the earlier Bill, the chief alterations Ueing provisions enabling the Board of Trade to declare the minimum amount required to keep each additional child niter one. It also provides a reduction of payments for children by one-twelfth for each Ss by which the parents' wages exceed the existing living wage.
