The acute shortage of houses in most o£ the towns throughout New Zealand is giving considerable impetus, particularly in tlie larger centres, to the erection of apartment dwellings after the style of those ao much in evidence in cities of England and the United States. In Auckland an extensive building scheme is in contemplation, and plans providing for the erection of five blocks of flats, housing 250 families and costing £200,01)0, have 'been prepared. The designs provide for handsome structures Hp to eight stories in height, the sets of apartments containing living rooms, .kitchenette, bathroom, one or more bedrooms and balconies back and front. A restaurant and other features of a modern hotel will be provided in connection with each establishment, in addition to such conveniences as elevators, roof gardens and drying rooms. Work on one building has already commenced, and many of the flats have been engaged in advance at rents ranging up to £3 10s a week.
