OPENING OF THE SEASON, 1 Although tho wind yestorday aftern.'„t>n "was father stronger titan bowlers like, the weather was otherwise all that could be desired for tho opening of tho season, and the fraternity gathered in full force both at the 'town and the Wesf. End greens, which were looking at their best, and were a credit to the respective caretakers. Ladies graced the proceedings at both games, and added to the pleasure of the gatherings. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. Iu formally opening the Town green, the •president, Mr. A. K. Smart, tendered a. hearty welcome to tho visitors, and expressed the hope that all tho clubs would en;oy a pros- , perou3 and successful season. He referred to i the fact that out of the original members I of the club only three were on the roll now—j Messrs. Newman, R. Cock, .aid H. Weston, j After paying a graceful tribute to the late , Mr. Jas. Paul (the father of bowling in the | district), Mr. Smart alluded to me yeat in- ! crease in the ranks of bowlers, and the ad- ; ditlon of two new clubs in Taranakl—Vogel- | town and Stratford- , Reference was also made ito the step taken by the New Plymouth qlub |ln acquiring a new site, whereon two greens j would be formed, one of which could be ! used during the winter, and he asked for I the bcarty support of the members to the new j venture. | Representatives of the Inglewood, Vogeltown, I Fitzroy and St. John's (Wanganui), briefly, though heartily, thanked the president for his ! generous words of Welcome and reciprocated i tho good wishes for the coming season. Mrs. Smart was then asked to "throw the jack," an act that was accomplished amid hearty cheers, and the opening cerempny terminated During the afternoon, afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. Smart and other ladies assisting her. The customary match, president r. vice* president, was played, the whole of the nine . rinks being occupied. WEST END CLUB. The official opening of the West End Club took place yesterday afternoon h\ the presence of a large number of members and visitors. The president (Mr. J. D. Sole), In declaring the green open, eipreswd great pleasure in welcoming the guests. It wa3 the first time for about five years that the season had ppened under what might be termed normal conditions He hoped that the development of sport would help of obliterate the memory of war. Objections had been raised against ♦he carrying on of sport during the war, but he thought thoso who made such objection then would Jigree that it had been a good thing to carry on, even during the war. Speaking generally, he expressed a belief that within 1Q years bowls would have reached the top rung of the ladder so far as pastimes were concerned. It was a great social game and a leveller of men. He regretted the opening had fallen on tho same day as that of the town club, and hoped tho latter would not be disappointed that none of the West End members were able to attend. He spoke of the venture the town club was embarking upon and thought it a wise step to look to the future. They were doing so at West End And believed within a short time the vicinity of the bowling green would be regarded as one of the beauty spots of the town. He then presented to Mr. Billing the championship shield won on last year's play, and the trophy for tho junior championship to Mr. Bullot. Mr. Solo also, on behalf of the champion rink in the Taranakl tournament, presented a framed enlargement of the members to the Club and expressed their intention, of adding Dominion honors to those they already held. He thanked tho members for the help given in tlie general preparation of the grounds, and the general appearance of the greens and surroundings was due lu the enthusiasm of the members. Mr. F. C. Bellrlnger spoke on behalf of,tho town club, apologising for the absence of their president. He congratulated the club on the excellent condition of the greens and surroundings, and also presented to the president the Cup, which ho hoped they would not holtt for more than one year. Messrs. S. Smith (Fitzroy) and A. T. Moore (Vogeltown) also Joined in congratulations to the West End Club and thanked them for the Invitations to their clubs to. be present' at the opening. I Mr. Sole acknowledged the good wishes from | the kindred clubs, ahd then Mrs. Sole rolled ! up the jack and the first bowl, amidst cheers for the club.
