STONE THROWING AT RELIGIOUS MEETING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. i Wellington, October 23. Information has been received of disorderly proceedings at Greymouth on Monday evening, when it is stated the Methodist school hall was seriously damaged, and several persons injured as the result of an attack with stones and other missiles by a hostile crowd in the street. A meeting of the Protestant Political Association was being held in the hall at the time, among those present being the Rev. Howard Elliott. Official information goes to show' that about 500 assembled in Chappel Street outside the Methodist hall, and stones ,were thrown at the windows of the building. Thirty panes were broken, and two or three persons inside the hall were struck by the stones, but none was seriously hurt. Beyond the stonethrowing there was no disturbance of any moment. All the available police were present and these did everything in their power to enforce order. Some of the stones were thrown from the roof of a house in the vicinity of the hall, hut as the street was badly lighted the police could not identify the offenders. It is stated there was a feeling of hostility to Mr. Elliott, and that the police found it neeessnrv to afford him protection until he left for Christchurch on Tuesday morning.
