The Kev. Canon Caar is to take up his duties as vicar of Greymoutk on November Ist. The Rev. T. Dent, of Reefton, wil leave that town this weak to take up a new charge at Tiraaru.
Voter an Adlam, of Oakilt% was on. Wednesday elected unanimously to the> office of vice-president of the Wanganui Vetorans' Association for the ensuing year.
The titles of the war peers have been gazetted as follows:—Ear! Beattv of the North Sea; Earl Saiji; 0# Bemersyde; Lord Allenbv of Megiddo and Fdlixtowe; Lord Plumer of Messines; Lord Byng of Vifny.
The Government proposes to replace' the late Mr. Jackson Palmer and Judge Wilson, of the Native Land Court, by making the appointment of Judge Ayson, of the Cook Island Court (who was appointed a temporary judge of the .New Zealand Court) permanent. Mr. P. O. Acheson, of the Native Department, is appointed the second judge. Lieutenant R. J. Tayler, who left Sew Zealand with the Main Body, of the Expeditionary Force, is returning on the troopship Arawa, due to arrive at Auckland about November 19th. Lieutenant Tayler is the second son of Mr 0. W. Tayler, Mayor of Eltham. He has been serving his country over five years, having gone into camp in August. 1914.
Two famous Australian tennig players, Messrs. Norman Brookes and O. L. Patterson, reached Auckland on Tues* day by the Niagara on their way home after an absence of four years or more. Messrs. R. Lycett and R. L. Thomas other Australians in the Wimbledon team, did not come by tho Niagara but returned to San Francisco and ore coming thence by direct steamer.
The members of the Whiteley Church Choir gave a social hist night in honor of Miss Elsie White, on the eve of her approaching marriage. The gathering took place at the residence of Mr, ana Mrs. Sutherland, and Wiis of a very enjoyable nature. During the evening the Rev. J. N. Milne made a presentation to Miss White, expressing the good wishes of the choir towards her, and regret also that she would be severing her connection with them. Other members joined in the felicitations, to which Mr. B. Avery suitably replied.
Private cable advice has been received of the death at Working, England, on Monday, of Canon James West Sfftck. Born in the Waikato in 1836, and educated at St. John's College, Walmate, Bay of Islands, the deecased wag con* nected with the earliest church mission work in the Dominion from 1859 to 1808. He joined a party of Wesleyan missionaries on their arrival in New Zealand, and he worked with them for about ten years. He then' joined the Church Mission Societv, and assisted Bishop Selwyn in tfie Auckland portion; of the diocese. After a stay in Engit V, deceas *d entered the service of the Church of the England Missionary society as a lay agent in the Waikato. 0 became a deacon in 1860, and was ordained priest two years later. Ho was chaplain of the Maori Mission for the Christchurch diocese from 1860 to 1884. Then he became Incumbent of 'btioub parishes in Oanterburv. and a of the Christchurch Cathedral in 1894. He left New Zealand in 1888.
