STIPENDS TO MINISTERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. : '-" •* Oamaru, Oct. 22. The Presbytery, in response to the ■presentations of-a deputation from the •Offlce-Bearers' Association, resolved to, overture the General Assembly to take definite steps to raise ministers' stipends to £350 and a manse, with a corresponding increase in the home missionaries to. meet the increased cost of living. ESCAPED PRISONERS SENTENCED. Invercargill, Oct. 22. Two youths, Windsor and Harris, aged 16, who escaped from a prison gang, came before the Court to-day, Harris Was. sentenced to twelve months' hard labor and Windsor to reformative treatment for two years, cumulative with the present sentence. NOTIFICATION'OP DISEASE. Christchurch, Oct. 22. The Hospital Board resolved that the Government be asked to make venereal disease notifiable, and other districts were asked to co-operate. CONCEALMENT OF BIRTH. Wellington, Oct. 22. A young woman, Margaret Ethel Levy, was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day with the murder of her infant child, alsp A with concealment of birth. The more serious charge was dismissed, and on the minor count accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. ' . SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS. Wellington,' October 22. A deputation representing the South African Veterans waited on the Prime Minister to-day and asked that men wh.o_serv«Lin..the.. , Boer War should be accorded the same privileges, especially in regard to the acquisition of land, as returned soldiers from the European war. Mr. Massey, replying, expressed sympathy with the request. It was not so easy to grant it as at first appeared, but he thought it could be provided for. He would undertake to bring the matter before Cabinet at the first, opportunity, and did not doubt fliat it would 'receive ample Mipport. If the request was granted the Dominion would gain some valuable settlers. It was css»ntial that production should be increased, especially with lower prices in prospect in the years to come and the resulting 'increased difficulty in meeting the great expenditure arising out of the war. Only the expansion of cultivation would secure that increased production.
