MEMORIAL TO FALLEN SOLDIERS.

RAISING FUNDS AT HILLSBOROUGH The Hillsborough Hall, which was •tastefully decorated, was crowded on Tuesday night with residents of that and the surrounding districts, the occasion being a concert and dance in aid of the fund for erecting a memorial in honor of the fallen soldiers of that district. Mesdames L. Withers and E. Sole, and Miss D. Sampson were responsible for the decorations. Prior to the opening item Mr. 11. E. Sampson, who presided, briefly referred to the object of the entertainment. Practically all the soldiers, had, he said, now returned, except the silent number who would never return, and it was now their duty to do something to commemorate the TOemory of those who had fallen at the front. The suppliers of the Bell Black factory had voted £3OO as the nucleus of a fund for erecting a stiitable memorial, and the residents of the Hillsborough district, had decided I to amalgamate with Bell Block in honf ordng the bravo boys of the district, who | had fallen. This concert was held to i augment the fund, and no doubt su'bI scriptions would be received so that a [ memorial creditable to the district might ibe erected. He thanked all those who ' came to assist. A very, enjoyable programme of musical and vocal items was then rendered to ;an appreciative audience by the following, encores 'being numerous: Piano duets, Misses Bennett; songs, Mr- A. Rayner; humorous recitations and monologues, Mr. Hartman; songs, Misses Rea and Bennett; banjo solos, Mr. Gadd; pianoforte duet Misses Bennett; comic song, Mr. Howlett. The accompaniments were played by Misses Bennett, Hill, Rayner and Mr. Gadd. After the National Anthem had\ been sung by the audience supper was dispensed by the ladies. The hall was then cleared for dancing, which was kept up till the early hours. Messrs. E. C. Stanley, L. and J. Sampson acted as M'sC," and excellent music was provided by Miss 0. Giddy, extras being played by Misses Bennett. Bishop, Hill and Rayner and Mrs. Thomas. During the evening guess, ing competitions added to the funds- A cake donated by Mrs. Smellie, and in charge of Miss D. Sampson, realising. ,£S ,11s. and was won by Mr W. Skclton (Waihi), whilst 50 of flour, donated by ' Mr. G. Pearce (Fitzroy), in charge of Mrs L. A. Marsh, realised £P> 3s, and was won by Mrs. Smillie. The committee,' of which Mr. H. C. Sampson was chairman, and Mr. E. C. Stanley secretary, deserve to be congratulated on tlie success of the evening. •
