SURVEY OF LAND.
THE DEPARTMENT'S REPORT. (By Wire.—Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Tuesday. During the 12 months covered by the annual report of the Department of Lands and Surveys covering survey work, 302,369 acres were dealt with in "rural surveys," as against 343,525 acres for the previous year. The decrease of 41,156 acres, it is stated, was due (partly to the small field staff available and partly to the fact that so many of the surveyors have been employed in the surveys of small estates for soldier settlement, instead of large blocks of Crown lands. The area of Native lands surveyed during ,the year for the same reason showed a decrease from 271,481 acreS to 241,927 acres. The cost of rural surveys remained the same, Is 6d per acre, but Native surveys went up from Is Od to Is 7d per acre. This was due to the cost of work done by private surveyors.
