Demole, who was a corporal in the Australian Army, giving evidence be-, fore the Commission of Enquiry in regard to Tanks, said he realised the advantages of the chainrail system while he was engaged in heavy transport work in West Australia in 1911, but the War Office returned the documents In 1012 stating they were not further experimenting with ch&inrails. Friends, urged him to submit model! to the Germans, hut he refused owing to the likelihood of their becoming enemies. Without success he submitted fresh plans to the War Office in WIS. Tie thought his own invention was better than the present Tanks, in' view of their ability to go backwards, the steering gear being better. The models, etc., cost ,-CIOOO. Mr Justice Sargent said the claim might be doubtful because it did not mature into the present invention, but the Commission was obliged for the evi« dence showing how the general idea originated.—Aus.-N.Z.
