Senator Lodge, in a statement, pointed out that in the event of the Democrats defeating the> Treaty ramification resolution embodying the reservations, the Republicans would vote down any attempt to reconsider the resolution. j Senator Lodge said that 49 RepubI licans and six Democrats would vote in support of the reservations. The vote on Senator Johnson's amendment, which is expected shortly, will be extremely close.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. TROOPS IN SILESIA. Received Oct. 21, 7.10 p.m. New York, October 20. Mr. Baker says that the United States troops which were despatched to Europe to participate in the holding of a plebiscite in Silesia, will not move to Silesia until the United States ratifies the Treaty.—Aus.-N.Z. The Times' Washington correspondent states that the attorney for the I.W.W. organisation at Pittsburg, in testifying before the Senate Labor Committee, admitted that I.W.W. and Bolshevik organisations in the United States were backing the steel strike.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE LABOR CONGRESS. Received Oct. 22, 12.M a.m. Washington, Oct. 20. Mr. Cary informed the National Industrial Conference and the American Federation of LBbor that he would not negotiate with the union representatives of the unemployed of the Steel Corporatio plants. He would not recede fr6m his previous contentions with reference to an open shop. The conference was adjourned owing to the absence of the Capital group. It is reported that the Secretary for Labor, Mr. Wilson, rather than see the conference break up owing to the inability to agree over collective bargaining, will appoint new members in place of those withdrawing.—Aus.-N.Z.
