CASTAWAYS PICKED UP.
LONG SPELL ON CHRISTMAS '" ISLAND. SURPRISE FOR H.M.S. NEW , ZEALAND. By Telegraph.—Press Auckland, Last Night. A private cablegram received by the Herald from Fanning Island reads as follows: — H.M.S. New Zealand arrived via Samoa and Christmas Island on the 20th inst. and remained six hours. Lord and Lady Jellicoe and staff were interested spectators at a tennis match against the cable staff, Panning Island winning by 26 games to 12. Two white men and a native were s picked up by the New Zealand at Christmas Island, They had spent eighteen months without outside communication, living on fish and eoeoanuts; They did hot know the war was over.
