THE MEAT TRUST.

AN EXPLANATION. Hamilton, Oct. 18. Mr. Campbell Johnstone was interviewed in regard to a question asked in the House of Representatives by Mr. G, V. Pearce (Patea), who quoted him as saying, in the course of an election speech delivered at Ngaruawaliiai "The Meat Trust has been operating in New Zealand for some time, and received assistance and accommodation from the bank that the Government is interested in to the extent of £2,000,000." Mr. Johnstone said he never mentioned the figure of two millions in connection with the trust. The figures he mentioned were £250,000. The only time two millions were mentioned was when he re. plied to a question whether he favored a State Bank. He said that at the present time the Government held two millions in the Bank of New Zealand, and might as well acquire the balance, and make a State bank of it.
