The dor. tli occurred at Inaha on Saturday of Mr David John Rainie, at the age of *O3 years. At Kawera on Saturday the death took place of Mr M. J. Jones, of Glen Road, ICaupokonui, at the age of 67 years. At Patea oil Wednesday evening (reports the Press), Sergeant P. 0. Tinney was entertained at a social, and presented -with a pair of field glasses and a set of cutlery. Mrs R. J. Carter is spending a few days in Eltham. She shortly leaves for Samoa to join her husband, Captain R. J. Carter, who has been appointed Chinese Consul at that place. Mr Wilson Scott, who has been located in Hawera for some years in the capacity of official tester -under the Dairy Division, has received notice of his transfer to Opotiki. A London cablegram reports the death of Viscount Astor at the 'age of 71. Lord Astor was an American by birth and was United States Minister to Italy from ISS2-S5. He was naturalised in England in IS!M> and was created a 'baron in 191G and viscount in 1917. It was said that during the war, as his income was subject to supertax in both England and America, his tax payments exceeded his receipts. Mr. C. A. MclCinnoy, master of the preparatory department at the Boys' High School, has resigned his position, owing to having accepted an appointment witli the Taranaki Education Board. In moving its acceptance with regret, the chairman (Mr. L. C. Sladden) at last night's meeting of the Board, expressed appreciation of Mr Mcliinney's good work. At last night's meeting of the New Plymouth High School Board, a letter was received from Mr. A. H- Johnstone resigning liis seat on the Board, owing to his departure from New Plymouth. In moving that the resignation be accepted with regret, the chairman stated that Mr. Johnstone undoubtedly had the cause of education at heart, and would have been a very useful member of the Board. There died on Saturday, 18th inst., at Hawera, at the residence of her son, Mr P. O'Dea, Lake Road, Bridget O'Dea, wife of Mr James O'Dea, aged' 70 years. The deceased lady was born at Do on, County Limerick, Ireland. She leaves a family of nine—six sons and three daughters. The sons are Patrick (solicitor, Hawera), John (Oovernmeuft dairy grader, Wellington), James (farmer, Auroa), Richard (of J. B. MacEwan and Co., Wellington), Thomas (dairy factory manager, Haniua, Pahiatua), Edmund (railway employee, Cross Creek). The daughters are Mrs F. Mcphillips (Manaia), Mrs M.- Radich (Manaia),_ and Miss O'Dea 5 (hospital ,»um, Pftlinerston N.).-~Stac.-
