STRATFORD.
(From Our Ovm Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) Stratford, Oct. 18. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. S. J. Rawles, of Opunftke Road, an old and highly esteemed settler. He was bom in Dorsetshire 70 years ago, and is survived by his wife and family of four, the two sons being Messrs Herbert and Archie Rawles. He always took a keen interest in dairying, and was for a time a director of the Stratford Dairy Company and a member of the local A. and P. Association. On Friday evening the Egmont Club entertained about SO members of the C.E.M.S., Eltham, and a very pleasant evening was spent at cards, snooker, billiards, and chess. The results of the iraraes were as, follows, Stratford being mentioned first in each case: Billiards 6—3, snooker 7 —4, cribbaee 15—24, fiw hundred 13 —10, chess oj—3J. Songs were contributed by Messrs Johnston, Diver, Loftus, Thorpe, and Silver and Mr. Harrison gave a recitation. Supper was provided. Mr/King, president of the Jigmont Club, in a brief speech, said he was of the opinion that there should be more friendly reunions with other clubs, especially with th'e C.E.M.S. and Egmont ; which were so close together.
Mr. W. A. McCuteheon, of Whangatnomona, has sold bis farm to the Government for the settlement of returned soldiers. The Government take possession about February or March next. The Stratford Fire Brigade will hold their annual ball on October 23, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the brigade. A number bf prizes well worth competing for are to be offered for the best fancy dresses. Mr. J. H. Thompson has presented the fire brigade with £3 3s, which is to be used in providing a roll of honor. A number of meetings of ratepayers in the Stratford County, to be held during the mqnth for the purpose of considering West and East Riding loan proposals, are advertised. Cr. Anderson referred, at the meeting of the Stratford County Council on 1 Saturday, to the various proposals foi obtaining electric power for South Taranaki. He was of the opinion that one large power board should cover Stratford and El tham Counties and Boroughs. It was decided to discuss hydro-electric power at the nest meeting of the council.
