Cable Assn. REMOVING "DUD" SHELLS. Received Oct. 19, 11.5 p.m. Paris, Oct. 18. The salvage authorities on the battlefields of France are using an invention by M. Zutton, a French scientist, which detects the resting place of any unexploded shell. It is hoped to gather up every one of the many thousands ot unexploded shells which up to the present have teen a serious menace to agricultural workers —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
THE EXCHANGE PROBLEM. London, October 16. The Paris correspondent of the Daily Telegraph states that all classes are slowly realising the seriousness of the exchange crisis. The introduction of the eight hours' working day hampers the efforts to increase production, whicii alone can reestablish the commercial balance and restore the national currency. There are 1440 millions' sterling in bank notes now in circulation, and the amount increased bv forty millions last week, further diminishing credit.
