Mr Justice' Adrian Knox succeeds Sir Samuel Griffiths as Chief Justice of Australia.
The Mayor of Hawera, Messrs R. S. Sage and L. 0. Hooker went to Wellington on Saturday to interview the Premier in reference to the Hawera Technical 'High School. Mrs M. A. Clark, St. Aubyn .Street, New Plymouth, has received advice that her son, Bombardier E. F. (Ted) Clarke, of tiie 2Mh Artillery, is returning by the Arawa, due 'November lath at Auckland.
Mr W. R. M'Kean, S.M., who was recently locum tenens in the New Plymouth Magistrary, has been appointed sheriff and registrar of the Supreme Court at Timaru, and chairman of the licensing committees for the districts of Timaru, Temuka and Waitaki. At the. Frontiersmen's smoke concert on Thursday evening, Lieut. A, R. Stand ish, of the Pari tutu Troop, was accorded a hearty welcome, and was the recipient of general congratulations upon his appointment as leader of the troop. The troop considered itself fortunate in having an officer with sucli wide experience to command it.
