LOCAL RAILWAY SCHEME. Whakatane, Oct. 17. i A proposal to build a link railway from Paengaroa to the railhead of the , Rotoftia line, a distance of 31 miles, at ■ a coat of about £350,000, under the Local Railway Act, was discussed by a i largely-attended conference yesterday. The Tauranga County Council has . already unanimously approved the pro- ; posal. A committee was appointed to ' gather information for a further coni ference. I • A SERIOUS CHARGE. ; . Dunedin, Last Night. In the Police Court James Reynolds ! Hayne (chemist), Elizabeth Simpson Inglis, and Norman Neylon were charged ! that on or about September 15 they i did illegally use an instrument with - intent to procure miscarriage. Evidence - was given for the Crown by ten witnesses, i after which the accused, who reserved 1 their defence, were committed for trial. 1 CAR PLUNGES INTO. A RIVER. ] "" Whakatane, Oct. 15. Walter Ncilsen, who was driving a four-seater Ford tax, drove over the edge e of the Waimana gorge yesterday, falling j 25 feet. The car disappeared in the > Waimana River. It is on the bed ol ' the river, and is reported as not worth removing. Neilsen escaped with superficial injuries to his back. The accident is attributed to a defect in the steering gear.
