EXPORT OF MEAT.
POSITION NOT SERIOUS NOW.' By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington* Last Night. A joint deputation from the Council of Agriculture and the New Zealand Farmers' Distributing Company interviewed the Prime Minister to-day relative to shipping and shipping freights and contracts, the congestion of stocks of meat, the regulations for the sale of hides, and other matters. Mr Massey, replying, said so long as the right to commandeer existed the position was not seriou*s, as they could get their prodace away. The rate dur tag the past few months had been very satisfactory, but they had to look forward to the time when the commandeer expired. Means must be taken to avoid exploitation and have the produce carried at a reasonable rate. It was Intended to control freights and see that shipping %vas adequate to the task of transport. If necessary, said Mr Massey, shipping would be subsidised. He could not gee any objections to subsidising- lines if they got the service. Then they should find out what the shipping companies proposed to do. There were thirteen insulated steamers now in New Zealand waters and eight more weie expected shortly. . There was no difficulty in chartering tramps, but insulated" ressels were difficult to get at the present rate. The Government would <U all possible to assist the delegates who were going Home to look into the question of export and storage. .It is proposed to send Dr. Reafies with the delegates. • Mr Massey said he had not had time to go into the question of hides, but he would endeavor to brine about a better system than at present existed..
