Mr John Meuli, of Wanganui, lias been appointed secretary of the North Island Brass Baud Association, vice Mr flolten resigsed.—Press Association. A London cable sayß the Shah of Persia is the guest of King George for a few days. Nurse Margaret Corkill yesterday tendered her resignation as a member of the staff, to- the Taranaki Hospital Board. The resignation was accepted with regret, appreciative reference being made to Nurse Corkill's services. A Washington cable says that White House officials admit that President Wilson is likely to be absent from his duties for six weeks. It is announced from Washington that he spent a restless and uncomfortable day, but is now better. Mr C. Irving, chief steward of tfie liner Karamea, who was taken to the New Plymouth Hospital on Saturday when the vessel arrived in port, suffering from paralysis, died at an early hour yesterday morning. Deceased was over 70 years of age and was a native of Surrey. His last address was given as Tower Street, Brightliugsea. A Paris cablegram reports that Prinee Nicholas, of Koumania, denies that the King or Government has taken any action affecting the position of his elder brother, Prince Carol, as Crown Prince. Prince Carol married a lady who was not of royal birth. Cardinal Mercier (says a cable from Ottawa) has visited Toronto. He thankthu Canadian people for their help to Belgium during the war. ■
