DISTRICT NEWS.

PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At Rahotu on Saturday last the return match of rounders against, the Rahotu Public School team was decided, and resulted in a win for Pungarehu. The game throughout was vigorous, though not a very scientific display of rounders, obstructions and poor outfield play frequently marring the work of both sides. For the winning team 0. Orbell and P. Grenfell uid yeoman service for their side, while E. Hughson and A. Kahui showed out prominently among the Rahotu players. The game ended: Pungarehu 13 points, Knhotu 7 points. The pleasure of a good afternoon's outm., was enhanced with the handing round of afternoon tea. provided by tho Itahotu team under the supervision of Mrs. W. Harrison. A return match Is to be played at Pungarohu iu the near future. A number of person* went from PungaTehu t') the returned soldiers' welcome home at Rahotu on Thursday night last. There was a good attendance, the hall being crowded. Each of the returned men was given a medal. That there is a large number of returned men in this and surrounding districts who are c:«serly waiting for the cutting up of the Parlhaka Block is evidenced by the numerous enquiries that are being made as to what is being done in the matter. A commencement was made last week with the work of carting sand, shingle and cement, etc., preparatory to proceeding with the building of the Cape Egmoht Dairy Company's new promises. For about four years architects had little to claim their attention and practically uo one wanted their services. Now there is quit* a rush, and different people In all districts ate having places built. According to a man wisely connected with the building trade, those who delayed building till after the war in the be-lief that the cost would be lower have made a huge mistake. Though corrugated Iron, etc., has fallen it really costs 25 per cent, more to build a house now than it did during the War. The extraordinary demand, if nothing else, would tend to put prices up. Reports state that Parihaka Is now free from irttuenza. A active canvass is to be made at an early date throughout the district for funds towafls the contemplated improvements to the local hall, and it is to be hoped that this movement which concerns everyone will meet with generous support. Per report of Education Board, it is seen that that body have put matters regarding the local school and residence into the hands of their architect (Mr. C. H. Moore) to report on. Tho many friends of Private J. Alyward and Private Morris will be pleased to learn that they have so far recovered as to be able to leave *the hospital. I understand both hare arrived back home to Pungarehu.
