TIMBER FOR EXPORT.
NO SHORTAGE IN WESTLAND. By Telegraph.—Fress Association. Hokitika, Last Night. At a meeting of the Westland County Council to-day reference was made to a circular from the Wailii Borough Council as to the alleged scarcity of timber in New Zealand. It was pointed ou| that there was no scarcity here and if there was a shortage elsewhere in the Dominion it was caused by the want of shipping or other transport facilities. Regarding the regulations on the export of New Zealand timber to Australia it is now stated the Australian market is being supplied by large quantities of similar timber from South America, where no restrictions are put upon export. But inter-trade between British communities was being lost and was not likely to be repaired. A committee was set up to advise the Waihi Council of the actual truth regarding the timber trade and the harm being done, by the restrictive regulations. The Council discussed also a letter from the Minister of Lands alleging that no land suitable for soMiers' settlements was available in Westland. It.was resol. Ed to point out that soldiers were acquiring land here at an excessive price to themselves and extra cost to the country because the Government did not deal effectively with the position. Mention was made of a large area of country near Lake Brmmer suitable for settlement now on the market.
