POPULARISING NEW PLYMOUTH.

AS A PLEASURE RESORT. A COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME. ' _ 1 Writes "Go-Ahead":— Sir,—One of tho many- advantages of New Plymouth ia its suitability as » tourist and holiday resort, and I herewith submit a scheme for the popm-, laming the place to outsiders andi at the same time bringing a good dttfofi money to the town. The Bcheme might] well be taken up by the Borough Gonn»| cil or by a committee. Tho initisKoost would be small, but it wbuld dwwton i into a big thing. The onfr thing'needed i ' W ■■§ capable organiser and the moral! ' I ®f ort the town. The scheme- is in) ! sircfessful operation in Loa fornia, and I am indebted to the clerk for information on the matter. •There, it seems, they have a large scenle, - jeserve, and they provide 13 days' Jwli.i . day for 8J dollars. They now lave a i permanent camp, and carry on a*t| through the summer. New Plymouth ( could do likewise, but before building permanent camps the halls could be' Used and the visitors billeted there. Meals could be provided at the restaurants- Better still, a good number ctfuld . lie billeted among the residents at a ! '' x ®d charge for bed aud breakfast. The : providing of all meals in the houses j could be optional. i Evening amusement could be provided '' at the pictures, a concert in the KmIpirc Theatre, and probably something in the park, with euchre parties and dances at the beach pavilion*. The visitors would naturally wish to spend a lot of" time at the beach, and they would provide their own fun in the day time. On-' ganised trips could be made to places of interest, and arrangements might he made to throw the show places open during that time. The motor owners* would also arrange outside trips at a' nominal charge, and the shop-keepers; would lay out tempting "bargains." A trip to tho mountain could be arranged at an extra charge for those who desire . it. If 300 were the number fixed upon for any one week, then 60 a day could be taken to the mountain. To take the visitors to places off the tram route Ford lorries or electric lorries could be fitted up temporarily. Naturally, when people are getting a cheap holiday they would spend a good deal of money in afternoon tea, lollies, fruit, finery, and probalbly jewellery If the coupon system were used, they would probably arrange their own picnic parties, and picnic hampers could 0e sold in the shops, 1 estimate that a week's good holiday , pr ovided in New Plymouth from 7s 6d, everything provided, while with a trip to the mountain, the cost' would be £3 ss. ' A ten days' holiday' could be arranged for £3 15s, with*a, trip to the mountain for £4 7s 6d. At i the same time, I think somfe of the< initial outlay should be borne by the V town, Buch as advertising, bonus to or< gamscr, etc., for to have an extra £IOOO 2:' l[ n -Z e T k ' with a <*an«e'<rf re- [, n t, it for two or three weeks, and the same every year is surely worth something. The whole success of the scheme depends upon advertising, entliusmm, and getting value for the money expended. In my estimates, I have prepared to and pel ' week for bed tcrL r f and 20s for ten days' ! 1 ilave estimate to pay the restaurants or householders Is 3d each for d," aer and tea . If con p ons toed people would often buy Is 3d worth of fruit, etc., to form a r'fflic party especially if hot water was ivalL able at the beaches. I have reckoned ' Is per head per night for entertainment,• and Is for car fares daily. ESTIMATE FOB 7 DAYS 300 people „ £2 7a M each _ fim m Bed and Breakfast at H S .... &ft % •Motors 100 0 0 ■ incwentßijg,| J j: COST FOR 10 DATS.
