London, October 13. The Sopwith aeroplane, "Wa'i&by," which Matthews is using on the flight to Australia, is similar to the machine used by Hawker on the trans-Atlantic flight, but stronger, in view of possible rough landings. The strengthening of the machine, however, does not make any difference in the speed. Its maximum speed is 121 miles an hour and its lowest 48 miles. Its cruising speed, at an altitude of 500 feet, is 107 miles hourly, on fifteen gallons of petrol. The machine can be flown either open or as an enclosed, well-ventilated limousine, as the weather dictates. Complete dual control is provided, bo that either the pilot or observer can fly the machine. Provision is made for carrying smoke bombs to enable the aviators to estimate the amount of drift. Matthews has devised special instruments to correct the compasses. The exhaust from the engines is carried well ftft to diminish the noise. The machine is alble to carry eight persons and is also adapted for J;he carriage of mails. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. SHORTAGE OF PETROL. MAY POSTPONE THE FLIGHT.
