The Weekly Press Challenge Shield for North Island School Cadets' shooting competition, which was won last year by the New Plymouth Boys' High School, i 9 at present on view in the window of Mr T. Avery's bookshop, Devon Street.

The Education Board has agreed to ■tb cNew Plymouth schools closing on Wednesday next, on the occasion of the farewell visit of the Governor-General and the Countess of Liverpool to the town.

The Citizens' Band,will (weather permitting) give a recital at the Breakwater on Sunday afternoon, commencing at 2.45. A reminder is given of the fact also that the liner Karamea will be at the breakwater on Sunday.

A meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Association at Ohristchurch considered the question whether the association should take political action. After discussion it was resolved that it be a •recommendation to the conference that the words non-political be deleted from the constitution of the association.— Press Association. A successful concert was given on Thursday eevning by the choir of St. Andrew's Church, under the direction of Mr P. Frederic. The choir gave several concerted numbers Including choruses from the "Bing Boys," "Oh, who will oter the Downs," and "The Veterans' Song," which were all, well received. Songs were contributed by Mrs Northern, Mrs McGregor, Miss M. Jones, Miss M. Rea, Messrs E. Cocker and Andrews, all being encored. Mr O'Neill played several violin solos with touch and Mr Northern's flute solos earned for him encores on each occasion. Mrs P. Frederic and Miss Way contributed pianoforte solos and Mr and Mrs Frederic shared the playing of accompaniments. At the conclusion of the programme the Eev. 0. Blundell expressed the thanks of the audience to Mr Frederic and those who had assisted to give the entertainment a vote of thanks to them being accorded with acclamation.

At last night's meeting of the Patriotic Committee, Mr J. Paton read the following letter which had been addressed to Mrs Burgess on behalf of the soldiers at Chetwode Hostel: "Dear Mrs Burgess.—Will you kindly convey our thanks to the donors of the zonophoue recently donated to the hostel. We can assure you that gifts like this are very much appreciated by the boys. We would also like to state that the institution has been a great boon to us and hope this will in a small way show yon how we appreciate what the citizens of New Plymouth have done for us. The complimentary social which was tendered to members of the Citizens' ' Band, in the band room last night, by the president, Ven. • Archdeacon Evans and Mrs Evans, proved a most enjoyable function. In all, about 74 were present, including members of the Citizens' Committee and their wives, and bandsmen and thljir wives. During the evening songs were rendered by Misses M. Jones and Hine, Messrs W. P, Okey, W. G. Reid, A. Veale, and T. H. Booth, whilst Mrs Evans gave a recitation. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Denton, who also played the music for the dances, which formed part of the evening's entertainment, other amusements also being indulged in. Supper, which was catered for by Mr Woollcr, provided a pleasant break in the proceedings, which terminated about 1130. On the motion of Mr McLeod, conductor of the band, a hearty vote of appreciation of the president's attitude was carried unanimously, the president suitably responding.
