ELTHAM.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent). Eltham, Oct. 8. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday evening. The chairman, Mr. I. ,1. Bridger, reported that the open air classroom had heen completed. The cost was approximately £SO. The headmaster's report, was, read, and.it was-decided that as the number receiving hot cocoa at midday had fallen to about 20, the master is to'decme when to discontinue it. A complaint from a parent that a little girl had been assaulted by a lad while on her way to school was left in the hands of the chairman. Accounts for £0 15s were passed for payment. The annual meeting of the Eltham County Patriotic Committee was held in the Municipal Buildings in* same eftming. There was a good attendance of .members. Mr. T. Crump presided. The report and balance sheet was read, showing that assistance, in the form of clothing allowance, had been granted to the amount of £OO2. and in other forms to the extent of £4O. There is still to the credit of the local fund £lss 12s 6d, which is to be applied and administered m this district. The following gentlemen were elected a committee: Messrs. G. W. Taylor T B. .Crump, D. Syme, L. B. Gunstone, J. L. Campbell, A. Chrystal. At a subsequent meeting the Mayor was elected chairman; T. B. Crump, deputy-chairman; D Syme, secretary; and L. B. Gunstone, treasurer. A meeting of the Reform Party, with representatives from all over the Egmont Electorate, was hold yesterday to choose a candidate, but no> definite decision was-arrived at and it was decided to hold, another meeting next week. Messrs... Oswald .Hawken and Walter Powdrell, both well known men, were mentioned as probable candidates. A painful accident accurrcd at the Box Factory yesterdav afternoon, Mr T Brooker getting his hand badly mangled m the planing machine. He was attended by Dr. Cooper, who found it necessary to amputate one finger. Two others are badly injured. A welcome home social to several returned soldiers was held at Te Roti last night. .The.music for the dance was supplied by Miss Bluett. The Council has given permission to two gentlemen to shoot shags on the riven as a means of protecting the supply of trout,, but I fancy the eels are the greatest trouble. Two lads fishing in the town creek recently caught an eel weighing l'dlb and last summer I saw three of about equal size. These big fellows must take a lot of feeding, and the river is teeming with themf ° A slight earthquake was felt here at 2 o clock this morning.
