WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Thursday, Oct. 9. Though the Waitara . Choral Society is only a few months old, the concert, given by them on Tuesday night shows what can be done given a good conductor, musical enthusiasts and a lot of hard work. The society was fortunate in getting a conductress of Miss Marlow's ability, also the help of Mrs. Marlow as pianist. The opening chorus "Hunting, Song," made a very favorable impression. "Land of Hope and Glory" was, perhaps,- the most popular item of the evening, the audience demanding an encore. "The Lark Now Leavos Hs Watery Nest," was a very difficult piece for a young society to attempt, yet the rendering was very good. Other vocalists who mot with success- were the Rev. F. 13. Laurence, Mr. W. Smith, and Miss Cocker, while Mr. Hnrtman, the elocutionist, was encored several times. The Urenui orchestra, which collaborated with the choir, took their parts well, and were a ho?!t in themselves. The orchestra was composed of Messrs. Newton (2), G. Gaustad, and Mrs Nev. --n. Altogether the entertainment reflected great credit oh all who took part, and should ensure a full house for their next performance. The largest haul of whitebait ma-«a in Waitara for several years was made by .Mr. .T. Olsson yesterday morning, about 94 pint's-. Mr. T. Hughes has consented to get a band together for the Labor Day sports, and iiis application to the Council for the use of the instruments was granted. ' A, very good record is put up by the Canton family in Fire Brigade work. Superintendent (f. Y. Canton had 23 years service, Fireman R. F. Canton {2 years, C. Canton and J. Canton 8 years. W. Canton (killed in France) 5 years This is a record which is very hard to beat.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council took place last night. There were present: The Mayor. Crs. Ogle, Rennie, Blair. Bribbon, and C. H. Johnston. Cr. C. H. Johnston made the usual declaration and took his seat. Cr. Bockibessinger was granted leave of absence, regret being expressed at his illness, and a hope for his speedy recovery. Taylor had been appointed Government member of the Waitara Fire Board, was received. A request from the Clifton Football Club for permission to use the Camp Reserve for sports on Labor Day, and to charge admission thereto, was granted. The overseer suggested it would be advisable to get his successor there for a couple of days before he left. He thanked the Mayor and Councillors for the consideration shown during his term of office.
The electrical engineer reported that everything was satisfactory in his department, though he was still pestered with broken street lights, which kept him continually going round them. In accordance with instructions received, iie had erected a line in Harris Street to Mr. Parry's house using two poles taken from Strange Street, and one iron pole from stock at a cost of £7 19s Gd, not including the two poles taken from Strange Street.
