STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, villi receive prompt attention.) CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Mr, .T. B, Richards presided at a meeting of the executive of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce last evening. The chairman reported that the Customs Department had offered no objection to the establishment of a bonded store at Stratford, and Messrs. McDonald and Malone, were appointed a committee to obtain information regarding the requirements of the business people of the town.
On the motion of Mr. Thomson it was decided that the member for the district be asked to do hist utmost to have an adequate sum placed on the estimates for a new post office. The action of the delegates in Bringing before the Minister the needs of the district served by the Stratford-Kaponga branch railwaV, was approved. A report was received that the Railway Department had intimated that the mail trains could not be speeded up owing to the steep gradients and sharp curves. A member expressed the opinion that the trouble would bo got over by reducing the time of stoppages at different stations. Advice was received from the Postal Department that'the request for a motor mail service between Tahora and Ohura could not be complied with. It was decided to again impress on the Department the need for linking up the telephone between Tahora and Tatu and to point out that the settlers were prepared to erect the lines if the materials were supplied.. The executive's appreciation of the courtesy shown to the delegation sent to Wellington by the Hon. J. B. Hine was recorded. ' GENERAL. A farewell social was given in the Parish Hall by the parishioners of the Anglican Church last evening to Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Kivell, who, after a loifg residence in the district, are leaving for Napier. The Rev. C. W. Howard presided, and after mentioning the fact that the guests had been in the district for nearly thirty years, referred to their consistency as church members. Dr. Paget, in a letter of apology, referred to Mr. Kivell's association with the old Sports and Athletic Club, the Fire Brigade, and other local institutions which existed for the good of the town. A few wWs were addressed to the gathering by Mr. T. C. Fookcs, and an apology for absence was received from the Hon. J. B. Hine. On behalf of friends, Mr.i Howard presented Mrs. Kivell with (a wallet containing notes. The greater part of the evening was spent at dancing and cards. Music for the dance was provided by Rogers' orchestra. Dunns the evening ilems were given by Miss Black and Messrs. P. Coe and, J. B. Gibson.

On Monday next, a roll of honor for the Stanley Road School will be unveued. uy the Hon. ,1 B. Hine. Others who will speak include Major Urquliart, Captain Dr. Gordon) the Rev. Howard, and the Rev. R. B. Tinsley. Provision has been made for a number of musical items, and afternoon tea will lie served. All interested are invited to attend.
