MONTHLY MEETING. i The monthly mectlntr of the Taranaltl. Education Board was held yesterday, there being present Messrs It. Masters (chairman), 11. Trimble, P..T.H. White, H. J. Eaves, and 11. M. Grayling. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. .. TEACHERS' APPOINTMENTS, ETC. The report 'was adopted. Tho following resignations were accepted: Miss E. Guillford (Matau), Miss E. Burkbart (Ahitlhi), Mr. N. S. White (Tututawa), Miss I, N. White (Upper Mangorei), Mr. C. J. Hamblyn (Oknhakura), Miss It. B. Mill (Klore) and Miss M. Corklll (assistant. Board's office). Leave of absence was granted to the follow'ltJK teachers: Miss I. Edwards, Te Hoti (one month), Miss Rickey, Hawera (three weeks), Miss C. Mcl'ariy, Hillsborough (two months), Mr; S. Amnion, Toko (two weeks), Miss L. Grcville, Tariki (two months). Miss J. 11. Gibson, Egmont Village (two months), and Mr. I. M. West, Tikorangi (on account of family sickness).
Tho Teachers' Selection Committee recommended tho following appointments: Pukeho (sole : teacher) Mr. W. Landmann ; Uruti (sole teacher) Mr. P. Heath; Tututawa (sole teacher) Miss T. Simpson; Matau (sole teacher) Miss 0. A. Watkins; Huiroa (assistant), Miss E. ~1. Belcher.
Tlie- following further recommendations were made: That in pursuance to the recommendation of the Principal of the Stratford District High School, Miss Papps lie granted leave of absence to visit Wellington and Wnnganul, to study infant ekisswork, and report to the Board; that Mr. Insult's appointment as organising teacher in the Taumarunui district date from, the Ist December; that in answer to tho petition from settlers in the Durham School District, the petitioners be informed that on a vacancy occurring on the staff of their school their request will receive consideration ; that In the event of Mr. Slssons not taking up his position at tho Central School fresh applications should bo called as for a permanent appointment; that the Teachers' Institute be Informed that the Board':: reason for appointing Mrs Anderson to the position of Infant mistress in the Hawera School waa on account of her special qualification/: In Infant wrrk. The report was adopted.
TRUANT OPFICER'S REPORT. Tile truant officer (Mr. G. Pascoe) reported as follows: During tho month I have visited the following schools, the attendance being good:—Kiore, Rur.mih.i, Tifcorangi, Waiau, Motunui, Urenul, M.'mi, Pttkearuhc, Lincoln, Lepperton, Waiongona, West, End. Oitoke, Stratford. Ellham, T? ■Rot.i. Rawhitiron, Mangamingl. Hawera, Tawhiti. Tnknorn, Malapu. Kapmiga. Mangatoki, Cardiff, Walongnngnra, Pembroke, Waitara, and New Plymouth Convents. No truancy returns have been received for the month of August from the following eighteen schools: —Hurford, Hurimoaua, Kiore. Kohuratabi, Kaimlro, Mnhirakau, Mata, Marco, Maltoe, Matiere, Otangiwai, Ohangai, Pohokurn, Rnhotu, Tnhora, Whngainomona, Tewakarae and Matemateaonga. Technical Night classes—l have visited the Hawera, Eitliam, Stratford and New Plymouth schools, where, with two or three exceptions which are being attended to, tho attendance was good. The report was adopted.
ARCHITECT'S REPORT. The Board's architect (Mr. C. H. Moore) reported as follows: New work —Kaponga: Wo have completed the add : tlonai class room with the exception or inside painting I propose to hold this over 30 as not to interfere will) the classes. The matter of making the addiion a separate clas3 room is also held over as it is satisfactory for tiie working of the school at present to make this and the adjoining room into one. We have oomnWed the open air shelter at tiie Eltham School. Pilinma: The alterations and additions to this school are well on and will he jpompieted next week. The school is being held in the Hall in the meantime Marakopa —T am having this work cut out and framed together ready to ship to Marakopa. Improvements to school residences—As instructed I have gone Into the matter of tubs, coppers. i''.r.. as anplied to the school residences, and appiicoitlons have been made to.the. Department for a grant. Plans.-*-Plar.s have been forwarded to the Department and application made for a new Central School and also new Courtenay Infants' Schol and a new school at Albert. Plan? also have been prepared for additions to the Board's offices. Repair work.—lTremi - : The whole of the conveniences at both school and residence have been .renewed. Tills work has been held over for a considerable time At the same time several small repairs were attended to. Vataralmnka: Improvements to the lighting of the old porllon of the school have been attended to. Workshop —The des'rnctor Is about completed and the necessary piping to carry the shavings away will soon bo erected and 1 shall be glad to receive authority to secure a motor to drive the fan The whole of the joinery for Kaponga and Pihama additions and the new school at Arawhata were completed ai.d also a considerable amoun* o f school furniture and sundries were turned out In the workshop The architect was authorised to purchase a suitable motor for the workshpo. The architect was instructed to prepare plans for enlarging the present class-room at the 000 School to the full copacity of a grade two school.
OPtTA SCHOOL. The senior inspector (Mr. A. .T. Morton) reported in regnrd to the opening of a school at Opua as follows:—The number of school children given as intended scholars is eleven. Nino of these are six or seven years of age and three of these will attend from a distance of "Jfa to three miles. Five older pupils will still attend schools in Opunake. The road is metalled as far as the proposed temporary school building. The temporary building: is offered, with grazing for children's horses, at a reasonable rent. It is fairly suitable, but requires ventilation and repairs to the windows. There would also be necessary a (rate, a tank, and an out-offlce. The building is not in a wntral site. One near the dnlry factory would belter meet Ihe requirements of the present families. The establishment of a school is a reasonable demand. For the present It is advisable to carry on the school in the temporary premises offered, until the degree of permanence of the school can be estimated. The report was received and it was decided to apply to the Department to have the school re-opened. GENERAL. The following appointments on School Committees were confirmed:—Aurna. Mr. D. Barlow; Uruti, Mr. (i. W. Woods; Awalimn, Mr. 2i\ M. Hall; Fllzroy, Messrs. L. A. Chivers and V. W. Ardern; Kiore. .Mr. T. .1. Christian; Albert Road,' Mr. A. Jordan. Jt was decided to inform the Kaponga Committee that the present conditions at the school do not warrant the Hoard applying for a grant for additional accommodation. It was decided to supply the Douglas Committee with the necessary material for flooring the shelter shed. Application is to bo made for a temporary moveable room for the teacher at Waliaaufij. Matters connected with the following schools or residences were referred to the architect: Kahotu, Lepperton, Pungarehu, Norinanlry, and Oaonui. It was decided to inform the Toknora mittec that the Board is making urgent representations to the Department and sanction a grunt for additions to the school as early as possible. The application of the residents at WhenuaItuva for the re-opening of the' school was referred to the Senior Inspector for a report. Thanks was expressed to Mr. James Connelly for his offer to provide three acres of land free of cost for the purpose of a school site on the Upper Ohttra road. The application of the Paniho Committee for additions 'o the school was referred to the Senior Inspector for a report. The Board decided to apply for a grant towards the erection of a new school on the proposed new site at Upper Mangorci. ' The appointment of an assistant in the Board's office was left in the hands "of the chairman and the secretary Mr,.- It. Burrows was granted leave to assign the lease of Section 147, Block 2, Egmont S.D., to Mr. \V. F. Olsen. It .was decided, in view of the difficulty of- obtaining a good title by purchase, the BoaTd acquire the additional land required for a horse paddock at Lepperton under The Public .Works Act. The application of the headmaster of the Ngaere School for the' use of that portion of the school reserve at present, leased to Mr. A H, Lee, was granted as from the date of the expiry of the lease, conditionally upon him keeping the land and fences In good order, and free from noxious weeds.
