ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Jtr. H. G. Carman, Bookseller, will receive lirorapt attention.) October 7. ■The chairman, engineer, and clerk of Hie Waipa County Council (Te Awamutu) have been on a visit to Eltham and, with the assistance of Mr. Tipl.idy, cleric of the Eltham Comity Council, inspected the tarred roads in Kltham and Waimate West Counties. They were also shown the road making plant, nijd furnished with details of the system v.-uich has given the Eltham roads such an excellent reputation. llr. P.. D. Tosswill engineer for the Eit.hn.rn County Council was among those who visited the mountain quarry. Speaking to a News representative he said he thought it a great pity that so tmich money should have been spent, and yet fall short of the objective, when a comparatively small additional expenditure would have opened up an unlimited supply of metal now so much needed fcr road work. 'He calculated that the price (roughly) of putting the stone on trucks at VVaipuku would be about fls per yard. At present they were paying all prices, and as the supply of metal which was obtained from the Waingongoro River was getting used up, the position, apart from the mountain, was almost alarming. The result of the poll on a proposal to raise £20,000 for tar sealing and metalling roads in the South Riding of the Eltham County greatly relieved the mir.ds of those responsible for the welfare of the riding. The money is availa'bl». from the Government, and a start will be made with the work as soon as the weather is suitable. The first road to be taken in hand will be the Boylen Koad, and, when this is completed, there will be a continuous tar-sealed road from Kltham to Hawera, a change which motorists will fully appreciate. The new patent disc crusher for producing the small chips now used in large quantities when laying down tarred roads should arrive about Christmas. There are only two or three 01 these crushers in New Zealand at the present time, Preparations are now being made for tar spraying operations, and a start has i been made with the erection of a new Jcrro-concrete bridge on the Eltham Road, over the Mangawheroiti Stream. I The strueture is to replace the present timber bridge, which is too light for the present heavy traffic The engineer for the Waimate West County Council has been given three months leave of absence owing to illness, and Mr. Toswill is assisting to keep his work going during his absence. Mr. Freeman, clerk of the Court at Kltham and Stratford, is being succeeded by Mr. A. E. Dobbie, who has just returned from active service, and formerly resided on the West Coast of the South (stand. ' Mr. Dobbie arrives at Eltham to.night, Charges of breaches of the Licensing Act against Eltham residents, who were found after hours on licensed premises, will be heard at the Magistrate's Court next Wednesday.

A rare opportunity is now open to ladies of Eltham at Shipton's corner. Here are displayed 30 of this season's new model costumes in new and distinctive styles, and purchased at a heavy discount. Take a short cut to economy by securing one from W. Shipton, draper.
