Douglas that It was cut by the Council and It was left with tho overseer to have the clippings burnt. The Marine Department wrote stating that the matter of taking shingle from the beaches near Hawora should be managed by the Council, and there was no objection to the Council selling the material that It may take from the beach.—The chairman said this was what the Council had been trying to get for years. If any man wanted a license there would be no difficulty about obtaining one. The letter was received. Messrs. Walker and Nicholson (Hawera), applied for a renewal of their slaughter license. —Granted. T. Kata Thompson applied for permission to close a portion of Tiki Road, Ohangal. Only ono other person used the road, and lie had no objection.—Cr. DEPUTATIONS. Mi'. A. L. Campbell, representing the Eltham County Council, waited upon the Council and stated that the ratepayers of Eraser Road had carried a loan recently for the metalling of the road. There wai a portion of the road under the control of tile Hawera County Council, and ho wanted to know if they would metal this part so as ot Join up Mth the work being done In the Eltbam County. About half a mile need metalling.— The chairman said the overseer was dead agatnat this expenditure. About £3OOO hafl already been spent on the road, which should have i been spent on Moremere. Mr. C. K. Stannard, representing Mr. W. Cowan, waited on the Council, and asked their support to a proposal to acquire 15 acres of land in the Turuturu Road for the purpose of erecting saleyarde to be used by the joint stock auctioneering firms and the construction of a siding. It was proposed to form a company with a capital of £15,000. It was pointed out by Mr. Stannard that the saleyurds would be of great advantage to farmers. It was only a matter of time when the saleyarde would have to bo removed outside the borough, and under Mr. Cowan's scheme it would not be necessary for stock to pass through the town at all. The siding would not only be used for stock but for materials, such- as tar and cement, and would be of value to the Council. It was proposed to have a goods shed at the siding, and the Railway Department would no doubt be only too pleased to fall in with the scheme.—lt was decided to express approval of the removal of the yard* and to Intimate to Mr. Cowan that they could not express an opinion on any particular scheme Messrs. C. Ogle and C. W. Schultz watted on the Council in support of a petition that the Council would metal about 39 chains of Austin Road from Fraser Road to the top of< Harrison's Hill.—The overseer said the cost would be about £l2 per chain, and nothing could bo done until nett winter—The chairman pointed out that while the Coitnctl sympathised With the'deputation and recognised that something should be done at. the earliest possible moment, first attention had to be given to main roads. If these were not attended to, it would ultimately mean very heavy expenditure and higher rates. A deputation, headed by Mr. D. J. Williams, asked the Council if something could not be done to expedite the building of the bridge at Moremere. Mr. Williams said that If timber could not be obtained would the Council make an effort to obtain material for an iron or concrete bridge?— The chairman said the •timber had been ordered twelve months ago for three bridges, and so far sufficient had not been sent for one. They had already proposed concrete, but the Government said hardwood, and they had to build In hardwood, or would get no subsidy, Mr. Williams suggested that the Council seek permission to build the bridge In concrete and at the same time guarantee tho Department against loss should it be carried awn v. By doing this, consent may be obtained.
The chairman said It was too late for that, and the bridge would have to be erected on the lines laid down by the district engineer Mr. D Hughes said that tho Waimate West County Council had been able to obtain the consent of the Department, and saved a good deal of money in the erection of bridges not approved in the first instance by the district engineer by guaranteeing the Department ngainst loss in case of their destruction. Ho mentioned that the Harbor Board had a quantity of timber at Wangauui which It dod not require, and the New Plymouth Borough Council also had a quantity of timber laying about on different sections which it was not using at present, and it might be possible to borrow from these or some other local bodies.
Mr. Hurrell waited on the Council and asked that some metnl be placed on the Maklno Hill.—The chairman said they could make no promise, hut would do the best they could. Tho lorries could not be spared from other more Important work. Mr. Smyth asked that work In connection with the Maklno bridge be pushed on.—The overseer said that the Public Works engineer would be down on Jlondny and would let him know whether the timber available could be used or not for the bridge Mr. -T. Hobinson also waited on tho Council and asked that some attention lie given to the road used by him at Meremere. He said 'hat then' was no metal on 'he road, and no water tables, and the most I hat had been done at'any time was to make it passable.— The chairman said they would do what they could, but it. was hard 10 pet men to go out to tho back onuntrv The matter would be placed before Cr. Williams, the member for the riding. OVERSEER'S REPORT.
The foreman (Mr. Muggeridge) reported as follows: Beach Road—The metalling of this road is now finished, and 'he road has been rolled leaving a food surface Ohangni Road--About 2" chains on this road required metalling as the old metal was very thin. The lorrv bad been at work on the' road, and would I>e finished in about three davs, if the westhev proved suitable. \hlpalpa and Kainio Roads—There was some weak places on these roads, which have been metalled hv the teams, and the Ahlpiap.i Road is in good order from the 'oil pile to Scott Road A further Ho chains will have to receive some metal before it can be tarred. The rubber lyres for the tar sprayer have some to hand, but it .will be too late this season to use them as the tar spraying wilt soon 'start Re tho bridge over the stream on the Maklno Road, I have communicated with the Public Works Department to sec if we can use the timber that has been sent on In mistake, and If the sizes are suitable to their requirements this work can be none 011 with at. once. The ironbark for the bridges Is not coming to hand at oil satisfactorily. Tt is now over 12 -months since it. was ordered to bo delivered in five months. A considerable quantity of timber for bridge decking will bo required in the near fu'ure, and, as it is not casllv procurable in New Zealand, it would lie advisable to place an order for some as early as nossiltlc. A start has been made In obtaining shingle for tarring at. the Wnlngongoro beach, and it would bo carted to It's destination as soon as possible Another of the culverts put in by 'be TuMlc Works on the Tongnhoc Road has fallen in and So concrete slabs have been sent. out. to repair It. It was down a good depth, and was constructed of a papa drain with rooted wood for a top.— Adopted.
