Mr. Hughes was both wild and wise in his eloquence at the recent National at Bendigo, where lie was hailed like a popular monarch. "It was,' lie said, "intolerable and damnable that throughout the world to-day there should lie men who waved banners and sang patriotic songs, and yet preyed like vampires upon the very vitals of their fellowcitizens." That was exactly the "Little Digger" in a wild mood. When he was wise, here is what he said in words of gold: "It takes very little strength and no skill at all to throw bricks, but it requires a good man to build a house. There is no salvation for the people other than by work. There is always strife: there is no peace between good and evil. The people of Australia must not take the easy way, for the easy way always leads to destruction —it is the way of Bolshevism." Then he made his vast audience laugh—the best remedy for the disease of Bolshevism, which has been so aptly described as a disease that attacks only conquered people. "There, were some men in Australia," he said, "who spoke as though they would follow the bloody tyrants Lenin and 'Trotsky. I have seen them urge men to come along and release •j. man from gaol, defy the law, and set aside constitutional authority; but on the morning of the day when the deed was to be accomplished those gentlemen were missing. They did did not turn up .. There would be uo Bolshevism in Australia."
