FARM AND DAIRY.
THE WORLD'S FOOD SUPPLY. In an address on "The Future of the Empire's Food Supply," given before the Canterbury hvaiifh of tin- Royal Colonial Institute, Mr John Grigs, of Longboach, said that doubt had been expressed by some people as to whether the world could produce sufficient supplies of food to meet its population. There was, however, he considerod, no necessity for any fear in that direction. For one reason, science was increasing the products of the soil, and was going to play a much more Important part in this direction. If prices remained high for the next two or three years—and there was every indication of their doing so—quite sufficient grain would be forthcoming. The amount of wheat, in sight was plentiful. The trouble was lack of shipping, but if the wheat in sight could be placed exactly where it was wanted, there would be plenty for the world's needs. Price really ruled the food of tho world; if the orices offered were sufficient in-
ivji-emcnt there would bo plenty of foodstuffs rr,;wii. Personally, the speaker, thought that if wheat prices remained at f>tts to 55s per quarter, but not less, hii.'ie quantities would be frrown, at leas!, where labor was cheap, hut in face ' t' the price of labor and other reasons, it was absolutely essential that wheat should stand at a high level as far as price was concerned.
