UNEMPLOYMENT DOLE. GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE.. By Telegraph.—Presa Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 1, 8.45 p.m. London, Sept. 30. The Ministry for Labor, in a communique, states that the unemployment payments were not designed to meet the present extraordinary situation, for machinery sufficient to deal with such a multitude of cases does not exist. Moreover, the State could not contemplate payments at the present scale if the whole of the country's industries are to b e brought to a standstill, but the Government has decided to continue payments to ex-soldiers whether the claims were made before or after the strike, also to pay a slightly reduced rate to civilians unemployed owing to the strike, provided they r.re non-strikers. The Government, owing to the magnitude of its tasks, invites employers to act as its agents and make the payment to workers who have become unemployed. —Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. SIX MONTHS' REVENUE. Received Oct. 2, 1.20 a.m. London, Oct. 1. The six months' revenue amounted to £458,998,000, the Customs contributing £71,880,000, Excise £51,225,000, Stamps £8,139,000, Property and Income Tax £109,517,000, and Excess Profits Tax £129,887,000.
