Tho Baden Powell was to come off the s!!p at Lyttelton yesterday, and sail to-day for Wellington, from which port she leaves on Saturday for New Plymouth. She is expected liere with general cargo on Monday. THE WANGANUI SOUTH SPIT. The Chronicle understands that the position In regard to the south spit erosion continues to be very unsatisfactory. The weather and tidal conditions during the last day or two have caused further erosion of the beach and Incidentally, demolition of the sand dunes, with tlio result that the danger zone is extending further up towards the south mole. The groynes which were put In position had been proving very satisfactory, and the sand had been piling up around them; but these have been demolished very largely by the heavy seas, and portions have been strewn on the north mole. Those who hr, ■>• been on the scene are convinced that the present condition of affairs constitutes a ver? ''.crlous menace, even though the spoil d:.. hwged by the Kaione on to the beach may Isold the erosion somewhat In check at tha; particular point, the fact must be faced the; the deep water on the seaward site is fust approaching the river bed. It is a matt* 1 !' lor question as to whether the construction ■! the south spit internal wall will render ii a sufficient protection to tho coastline. It must be remembered that the wall does not extend very far, and tho danger zone whero the river may break through during a heavy flood is thus beyond its limits. The Harbor Board isc faced with a very difficult problem, a solution of which is not at present in sight. Tho Chronicle hopes that the position may be less serious than is stated, as judging by the facts the harbor works in progress may be seriously menaced at any moment.
