MOTHER COUNTRY.
A WELL-EARNED V.C. AUSTRALIAN'S PLUCKY ACTION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 30, 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 29. The first Victorian Cross in the North Russian campaign has been awarded to a South Australian, Corporal A. P. Sullivan. After fighting a rearguard covering action the platoon was compelled to cross the Sheika river by means of a narrow plank. Four men fell into the water, and Sullivan unhesitatingly jumped into the water four times, despite intense fire, rescuing all the men, who otherwise must inevitably have been drowned. His splendid example and heroism inspired all ranks, who were at the point of exhaustion, with the enemy less than a hundred yards distant. —Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
