A London cable states that Sir Edward Cooper has been elected Lord Mayor of London.

The Princeton University has cosferred the degree of Doctor of Laws on Cardinal Mercier.—Cable news.

President Wilson's physician has announced that the President must have complete rest and not deal with any State affairs until ho regains la's strength.

A Press Association message states that the death occurred on Sunday night, after a long illness, of Mr. Joseph Rayner, a very old settler of Marlborough, aged 93. Mr. Fred Barkfts, who lias been manager, of the Timaru branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, for the past ten years, retired from business on Monday, after 3t> years' service with that firm. Local employees bade-him a cordial official farewell. Mr. Barkas remains in Timaru. Mr. F. C. May comes from the Rakaia branch to Timaru.— Press Association.

Mr John D. Scott, recently manager for Ross and Glendining at Napier, and formerly of New Plymouth, and who has been appointed a London buyer for the firm, left by the Riverina, accompanied by his wife, to join the Indarra, sailing from Sydney for London. Before leaving Napier and Wellington, Mr and Mrs Scott were' farewelled by a numerous host of friends.

A Gisborne telegram says that advice has been received that' Dr. Newton, lecturer on Imperial and Colonial History in the University of London, ivrll visit New Zealand in March as a special travelling commissioner for the Roya! Colonial Institute. He has been invited to America and Australia to lecture at the universities on topics of Imperial interest. The London correspondent records the grant of M.C. to Major Hubert R. Dive, R.A.M.C, who worked incessantly without rest under intense shell fire at Templeaux le tiuerard on September 21, exposing himself in the most fearless manner, and showing a very fine example of devotion. The successful evacuation was entirely due to his personal gallantry and initiative. He had t'een continually superintending the evacuation from the front line since September 22. Is this a misdescription for Gilbert Dive, or is it his brother Roy? Both, the Star thinks, were in the R.A.M-C.

Mr. Frank Laver, whose death vas reported from Melbourne recently, was one of Uiß best all-round cricketers that Australia has produced. At one time lie held the record score in club cricket in Australia—3s2, not put, in a match, in 1893, playing for Eusi, Melbourne against St- Kilda. Ho was ft member of three of the Australian teams which visited England i« 180P, 5005, and 1600. Laver was n reliable batsman at a pinch, ajid a brilliant field at point, and, moreover, was the type of man who did much to play the' same in its liest and most sportsmanlike spirit. Laver was almost 50 year= of age, having been born on December 7, ISCIi.
