At a public meeting held in the Municipal Chambers on Monday evenim, over which Mr. ,(. Vf. Mi.-Mill.iii .(Mayor) presided, it was deckled to hold a conversazione and danco in the Town Hall in honor of the' Hon. J. B. Hine. and to mark the appreciation of the electors at, his appointment to a seat in the Cabinet. The arrangements were left in the hands of a committee consistine of Messrs. W. H. IT. Young, W. A. Hewitt, H. Asliton, and the Mayor.
Lieutenant ft. 1). liunter received a hearty welcome from his friends and others at (he railway station on his return to Kt.rutfov(l yesterday.
The Eev. J. X. Milne gave a lecture illustrated with lantern views of a highly enjoyable charatee at the Methodist Hall last night on "Home." The tine descriptive powers of the lecturer gained for him the closest attention of his hearers from start to finish.
Mr. J. Clarke (New Plymouth), presided at a meeting of the Taranaki Land Agents Association lipid in Stratford yesterday. Many matters of interest to Hie Association were discussed and dealt with. Mr. Clarke was elected president and Mr. Humphries secretary. The war trophy, in the shape of a gun captured from the Germans, which has been on exhibition in tlir Municipal Buildings since the peace celebrations, has been returned to Wellington at the request of the Director of Ordnance. On Saturday afternoon, a motor ear, in attempting to pass another car near St. Mary's School, Stratford, skidded and swerved. Two tyres burst, and the ears became interlocked, but no one ivas injured. In the medical and dental examinations, held in September, Miss Francis McAllister was successful in her first medical examination.
On Saturday afternoon, Mr. W. U»e Taylor, M K.C.V.S., addressed a gathering of dairymen in the Parish Hall on "contagious abortion in cows." Mr. Taylor said it was not till 1002 that the disease became known under its present name. 11: had been traced to a specific germ and was carried by contact, and the chief cause of spreading the disease was the male. ]t was very seldom that animals died as a result of the disease, but it caused farmers to lose a season with their cows. Mr. Taylor then went on to show very clearly what means should be adopted as a precaution against the disease and to prevent its spread, giving the best for- [ mula r.nd explaining the methods of ! use. The whole herd should receive attention, including the m»la», and
farmers should not wait for the appearance of the disease before acting. Mr. Huggett presided, and at the conclusion, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer.
