A REIGN OF TERROR.
SABOTAGE ON THE ICAKAMEA. Auckland, Sept. 20. "There has been a reign of terror on the Karamea all the way from London to Auckland," said Chief Detective M'Mahon when outlining the case in which three men from the vessel were charged in the Magistrate's Court with having embezzled twenty electric globes, worth £C, tiie property of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. "Throughout the entire voyage," said the detective, "these men have been breaking lamps and boiler gauges, thus threatening the safety of the ship. They have been throwing things overboard and liehaving generally in most outrageous fashion. On arrival at Auckland they took 2ft electric globes from various clusters of lights and deliberately smashed them on the wharf. The captain asked them if they had any complaints, but thoy refused tn give any information, and constituted themselves a secret society. They have become so unbearable and made themselves so disliked that the captain no longer desires their presence on the ship." The accused declined to make any explanation from the box. "Sabotage such as this must be stopped," said the magistrate. "Each man will be ordered to pay £2 for the damage he has done, and partly as a punishment and partly as a warning to , others will be sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment with hard labor!"
